From Bahia to Brooklyn, Caribbean stories

A seven part series

Brazil

From Bahia to Brooklyn - Episode 2 - Still 10

To tell the larger story about the Caribbean, it’s almost impossible not to start deep in South America, in Bahia, Brazil, and end in Brooklyn, New York. Nina Jurna moved to Brazil in 2011 with the belief that she would find the ideal mixed society there—a melting pot of colors and cultures. However, it quickly proves to be an illusion. Brazil is a harsh class-based society where privileged and high positions are predominantly held by the white Brazilian upper class. At the bottom of the social ladder are mainly black Brazilians. In Rio, the history of slavery has been literally swept under the rug. But how does it look in Salvador, the capital of Bahia state, where the majority of the population is black?
