From Bahia to Brooklyn, Caribbean stories

A seven part series

Trinidad & Tobago

From Bahia to Brooklyn - Episode 2 - Still 10

Nina Jurna leaves the South American mainland and lands for the first time on an authentic Caribbean island, Trinidad. Trinidad is located off the coast of Venezuela, just like Curaçao and Aruba. It is an island with a distinct identity. As a former English colony, it has two major ethnic groups: descendants of enslaved Africans and descendants of Indian contract workers. Does it actually matter where your roots lie in Trinidad? Or have all the differences been dissolved into one colorful melting pot? Nina sets out to find the dilapidated house of the world-renowned writer V.S. Naipaul, meets the frequently arrested revolutionary activist and Black Power leader Kafra Kambon. She also interviews the militant Islamic leader Umar Abdullah, who attempted a coup in Trinidad in the early 1990s and was recently involved in recruiting young Trinidadians for ISIS in Iraq. Additionally, she observes how the traditional Indian festival of lights has a Caribbean variation in Trinidad and discovers the origins of Calypso, a joyful dance music with sharp social commentary.
