In 2023, we produced this documentary series in which journalist Nina Jurna, with Surinamese roots herself, travels through the Caribbean in her search for Caribbean culture. Colonialism, slavery and contract labor have brought the inhabitants of these places together, resulting in a fusion of Arawak, European, African and many other cultural elements. Jurna investigates how this affects today’s society and what is left of the original indigenous population. What exactly is the influence of this mix of people and cultures on daily life? How has this cultural diversity seeped into things like religion, skin color, music and cuisine? Nina gradually experiences her journey through the Caribbean more and more as an investigation into her own origins.
