Nowhere have so many peoples and cultures from around the world been brought together through violence or recruitment as in the Caribbean. Since Columbus’ arrival in 1492 and the genocide of the original inhabitants, a colorful melting pot of Caribbean society has emerged through slavery and colonialism. In the travel series “From Bahia to Brooklyn: Caribbean Stories,” Latin America journalist Nina Jurna explores how the past continues to shape the present in seven countries. Throughout her journey through the Caribbean, Jurna increasingly experiences it as an exploration of her own roots.
“From Bahia to Brooklyn: Caribbean Stories” is a co-production of Memphis and VPRO. The seven-part series will be broadcasted on NPO 2 every Friday starting from June 9th at 8:30 PM.
