Last Saturday, a jury consisting of members of the Circle of Dutch Film Critics nominated The Photograph for The Dutch Film Critics Award. The jury determines the nominations and also chooses the winner from the feature films and long documentaries that will premiere at the Netherlands Film Festival. The Dutch Film Critics Award is awarded annually.
The Photograph is a documentary directed by Sherman de Jesus, inspired by the work of James Van Der Zee and Jamel Shabazz. The Photograph tells a story of Harlem, NYC through images that have at times been suppressed, forgotten and lost. Photography was used to subvert stereotypes and show a more complex and nuanced view of Harlem culture.
