Over a pioneering career spanning more than seventy years, she became one of the most influential artists of all time. Her visual language of dots, mirrors, and infinity dissolved the boundaries between the individual and the cosmos. Kusama transcended generations and borders; we view the upcoming premiere of our documentary Kusama in Holland as a grateful, posthumous tribute to her extraordinary life and work.
Kusama’s legacy is intimately intertwined with the Dutch avant-garde. Her arrival in the Netherlands marked a rapprochement between former wartime adversaries and a call for a new era defined by cosmopolitanism, sexual liberation, and feminism. Artist Henk Peeters of the Nul Group brought her to the Netherlands, challenged and inspired by her provocative confrontation with the art establishment.
Beneath the iconic polka dots and mirror rooms lies an existential resonance: a mythical drive to make infinity tangible and a contemplation of whether art can offer healing in times of societal hardening. Kusama’s pursuit of freedom remains an enduring foundation for contemporary artists—including performance artist Alicia Framis, who reflects in the film on Kusama’s strategies and illustrates how her struggle for artistic and female autonomy continues to resonate today.
